Former NFL Player Says about 50% of the League Smokes Marijuana, Down from 90% in the 80's

Lomas Brown says that he is convinced that marijuana has been a problem in the NFL for decades. Brown claims that when he entered the league in 1985 that up to 90% of NFL players smoked marijuana recreationally, or as a way to relieve stress and pain. No doubt to ease the aches from a sport that is brutal on the body, and can cause life-long injuries. Brown says that currently, he thinks about 50% of the players smoke marijuana. According to a CBS report from last month when the Lion’s busts were big news, they said that four in ten draft-eligible players from this years draft have a record that says they failed at least one school-administered drug test for marijuana. They say that 2 in 10 of the eligible players have failed more than once for marijuana.

Sports Illustrated is reporting that in addition to the vast potential of this year’s draft class, some industry insiders have told them they are concerned about the increased number of prospects who have a history of marijuana use in their background.
