John W. Huffman is the inventor of the class of chemicals that mimic the effects of marijuana. He invented them as a way to study the effects of cannabinoids on the brain. Marketed as “spice”, “K2” and “gold” among others, it is sold at some head shops, and some truck stops around the nation. It is carried in less outlets now that many states have moved to ban their purchase and possession with local laws, and state laws. The DEA currently bans five cannabinoids, but Congress is weighing a broader ban.

Huffman is now calling for the legalization of marijuana to help curb the epidemic he started.

DEA Goes After

The substance that is marketed as a “synthetic marijuana” under names like K2 and Spice have finally caught the attention of the Drug Enforcement Administration. The chemicals that make up K2 and other products marketed as an “incense” not for human consumption is smoked, like marijuana, but it is actually a combination of herbs that is sprayed with a chemical compound.

The DEA announced this morning that it will ban the five chemicals used to produce synthetic marijuana, JWH-018, 019, 073, 200, 250, making the product illegal to sell or posses in the United States. Local jurisdictions, and a dozen states have already made laws to outlaw the substance including Kansas, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky and Oregon.

Florida Sheriff Arrests Dozens for Selling K2, New Test Can Detect The Substance in Urine

Polk County Sheriff, Grady Judd of Florida is making good his promise to crack down on stores that sell K2 or Spice. This week the central Florida sheriff announced more than a dozen arrests over the controversial product that is sold as incense, but is really an inert combination of dried herbs sprayed with the chemical JWH-018 or a similar byproduct.

On Thursday, undercover detectives purchased the products at various outlets and those clerks behind the counter were then arrested and charged with the sale of an imitation controlled substance, a third-degree felony in Florida.

Georgia Joins the List of States Banning Fake Marijuana

Georgia Governor, Sonny Perdue signed a bill on Monday to outlaw the use and sales of synthetic marijuana, the most common brands, “K2″ or “Spice”. HB 1309 places fake marijuana on a Schedule 1 controlled substances list right along side Heroin and the natural plant it tries to emulate, marijuana.

K2 Almost Outlawed In Kansas, but Law Enforcement Can't Wait

The Kansas House endorsed legislation this week, to outlaw synthetic marijuana, sold as incense under the brand name K2 and currently perfectly legal. “This is the new drug of choice,” said Kansas Rep. Rob Olson, the bill’s sponsor. The state Senate passed similar legislation last month, and after a final House vote this week, lawmakers will reconcile the two versions of the legislation before sending it to Gov. Mark Parkinson for a signature. Kansas would be the first state in the nation to outlaw the product.

Lawmakers in Kansas now going after

Just a few months after public awareness in Kansas about the marijuana substitute “K2” lawmakers are already plotting to make it illegal. K2 is a proprietary blend of herbs and extracts that supposedly gives it’s users a high similar to marijuana. It is sold as an incense, but users smoke it to get the high [Read on . . .]
