Iowa Pharmacy Board Recommends the Rescheduling of Marijuana

Carl Olsen of Des Moines, Iowa has vowed to take state regulators to court after they turned down his request that they legalize medical marijuana. Mr. Olsen wants the Iowa Board of Pharmacy to allow Iowans to use medical marijuana. He is using a decades-old piece of Iowa Law Code that says the substance may be used for medical purposes as long as the Pharmacy board sets up rules.

He is claiming that the Iowa Board of Pharmacy has a legal obligation to set those rules.

The Iowa Pharmacy Board attempted to send the medical marijuana issue back to legislators in hopes that they will reclassify marijuana in a way that would allow it to be used for legitimate medical purposes. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the Democratic House majority leader said that lawmakers are unlikely to fulfill the pharmacy boards request during the next year’s legislative session saying, “I don’t think either the majority or the minority party, whichever that may be, will spend a lot of time on the issue of medical marijuana.”

a public meeting that was held Wednesday with the Iowa State Pharmacy Board to decide whether to recommend marijuana be legalized for medical purposes. The board reviewed 13 questions that they were legally bound to discuss before rescheduling marijuana. The questions started off with a discussion about marijuana’s potential for abuse.
