Inventor of "Fake Marijuana" Calls for Legalization of the Real Thing

John W. Huffman is the inventor of the class of chemicals that mimic the effects of marijuana. He invented them as a way to study the effects of cannabinoids on the brain. Marketed as “spice”, “K2” and “gold” among others, it is sold at some head shops, and some truck stops around the nation. It is carried in less outlets now that many states have moved to ban their purchase and possession with local laws, and state laws. The DEA currently bans five cannabinoids, but Congress is weighing a broader ban.

Huffman is now calling for the legalization of marijuana to help curb the epidemic he started.

Georgia Joins the List of States Banning Fake Marijuana

Georgia Governor, Sonny Perdue signed a bill on Monday to outlaw the use and sales of synthetic marijuana, the most common brands, “K2″ or “Spice”. HB 1309 places fake marijuana on a Schedule 1 controlled substances list right along side Heroin and the natural plant it tries to emulate, marijuana.

K2 Almost Outlawed In Kansas, but Law Enforcement Can't Wait

The Kansas House endorsed legislation this week, to outlaw synthetic marijuana, sold as incense under the brand name K2 and currently perfectly legal. “This is the new drug of choice,” said Kansas Rep. Rob Olson, the bill’s sponsor. The state Senate passed similar legislation last month, and after a final House vote this week, lawmakers will reconcile the two versions of the legislation before sending it to Gov. Mark Parkinson for a signature. Kansas would be the first state in the nation to outlaw the product.
