Jan. 5 2010After many years and millions of dollars in research and development, a Vancouver, BC Company  has clinched a deal to sell 10,000 pounds of its advanced organic fiber, Crailar, to Hanesbrands Inc, the well-known T-shirt company. Crailar is a durable yet soft fiber made from hemp in a special process. Naturally Advanced Technologies Inc. says it can produce a certified organic yarn with the feel of cotton, but with characteristics, such as tensile strength, that cotton cannot achieve.

“This first purchase order supplies Crailar fiber in a full-scale trial…” said Ken Barker, CEO of Naturally Advanced. He went on to say that “the next phase in product development would be to conduct consumer testing.”

Crailar is also expected to have other applications in apparel, performance textiles, energy, composite materials, and pulp and paper markets. Hemp fibers come from the non-drug variety of Cannabis and have been in use for centuries in rigging, paper and clothing.
