Canadian Airline Passengers Fly the Weed-Friendly Skies

Passenger Jet AirlinerFour Airline travelers in Canada heading from the West Coast to a medical marijuana conference in Toronto were allowed to bring their marijuana vaporizer on board the commercial flight earlier this month. The group, which includes Canadian Activist Lisa Kirkman, may be the first people in Canadian history allowed by an airline to use medical marijuana during a commercial flight.

Kirkman said they used the vaporizer on a June 2nd flight throughout the flight without any hassle from the flight attendants or from fellow passengers. She said they were allowed to use the vaporizer since there was no smoke produced. All four of the passengers who shared the vaporizer are licensed from Health Canada to use medical marijuana, and used their documentation to get through airport security checkpoints with the vaporizer and the additional cannabis. Kirkman contacted the airline ahead of time to confirm that she would be able to use the device in flight.  She had recently undergone intestinal surgery and was in a great deal of discomfort. She believes she would not have been able to endure the long flight, or attend the event without the use of the vaporizer.

She told reporters that there is no reason why a medical patient shouldn’t be allowed to use a vaporizer in flight if someone with another health issue could use an inhaler. She said she contacted West Jet airlines after Air Canada was not as accommodating with her request. Representatives with Transportation Canada were looking into the issue, calling this the first incidence of a vaporizer being used in-flight that they were aware of and were consulting with experts on air travel regulations to find out if the practice would be acceptable on other flights for Canadian medical marijuana patients. At this time most airlines do not have a policy in place concerning the use of vaporizers.
