Willie Nelson Arrested for Marijuana over the Weekend

Willie Nelson was charged with possession of marijuana on Friday after a routine checkpoint stop in Sierra Blanca, Texas, about 85 miles east of El Paso. The music legend and long time cannabis activist was stopped around 9am when a Hudspeth County Sheriff noticed a suspicious odor on the bus. A quick search turned up six ounces of marijuana. Nelson, who turned 77 this year, claimed that the marijuana was all his. Nelson along with three other people on his tour bus were arrested at the scene, and then released after paying a $2,500 bond.

Nelson’s longtime harmonica player, Mickey Raphael told Rolling Stone magazine that Nelson told him he feels great, he lost six ounces! Nelson was traveling from California to his ranch in Austin Texas at the time, and the arrest is not expected to affect his current touring schedule. This is not the first time Willie Nelson has been on the wrong end of the law when it comes to illegal substances. In Lousiana in 2006, 1.5 pounds of marijuana and three ounces of hallucinogenic mushrooms were found on this tour bus. He pleaded guilty on that case and was sentenced to six months probation and a $1,024 fine. In 1995 Nelson was arrested in Waco, Texas after he pulled off the road to sleep after an all night poker game.

A police stopped and saw a joint in the car’s ashtray, and then Willie confessed that there was a small amount of marijuana on the car’s floorboards. Nelson is on the advisory board for NORML and has worked for decades to end the prohibition of marijuana. He has recorded and produced radio and television commercials urging Americans to help end cannabis prohibtion in the US and he also hosted a 2005 Benefit Gold Tournament for NORML at his personal golf course in Spicewood, Texas. If convicted of the charge he could face up to six months in a Texas prison.
