Federal authorities are saying that they have busted a drug ring that was growing marijuana in California under the guise of medical use and selling it across state lines for inflated prices. Federal prosecutors in California unsealed an indictment on Monday that accuses six people of moving medical marijuana from farm fields in Fresno County to the Boston area for sale.
The indictment reports that the growers had posted medical recommendations from doctors in order to claim the crops were legal under California law. Prosecutors are charging the six with selling the medical marijuana in Massachusetts for three times what it could fetch in California. Three of the defendants are from Fresno, California and three from Massachusetts. One of the Californian defendants is still at large.
Federal officials were alerted after a Utah traffic stop last week when a trooper pulled over a van for a windows tint violation and changing lanes quickly without signaling. The trooper said he quickly became suspicious based on multiple indicators. The van had 184 pounds of processed marijuana. Marijuana from California nets around $1,000 a pound in California, in Massachusetts the defendants can get $3,000 to $4,000 for the same amount. Seized in the bust was 3,500 pounds of processed marijuana, all trimmed and ready to sell, almost $115,000 in cash, and, according to the indictment, $9,000 dollars worth of jewelry.
All in all, there were about 4,600 plants with medical recommendations posted near by, all recommendations were from just two doctors. The doctors are not breaking any law by recommending marijuana, but both have been investigated for violations. One of them, Dr. Daniel Bruker is currently under investigation for several issues including recommending marijuana without explanation and exchanging drug prescriptions for sex. The other doctor, Terrill Brown says he is really troubled to find out his recommendations are connected to a criminal investigation and he does his best to make sure only legitimate patients get recommendations.
