Vancouver Island airport was completely closed down for four hours on Wednesday morning after airport officials discovered what first looked like a hand grenade in a passenger’s luggage. The passenger terminal at Campbell River Airport was evacuated shortly after 6:30am, when an X-Ray scan revealed the suspicious metal item inside a green bag. The item was originally spotted in the bag as two men passed through security scanners around 6:15 a.m. Police called in explosives experts from Vancouver and scheduled flights were re-routed to Comox while the bomb squad investigated.

What they found when they opened the suspicious suitcase was a marijuana grinder that was made to look like a replica grenade. The metal grinder, used to crush marijuana and make it easier to roll joints or vaporize was just cast metal, with a chamber inside to hold the ground up cannabis. No drugs, marijuana or any other substance was found in the passenger’s luggage to suggest the purpose of the item.

The airport was re-opened at 10:30, and the Royal County Mounted Police Force detained two men in connection with the grenade-looking object. The two men were eventually released, and no charges are expected. RCMP constable, Alexa Blacklock said in a press release about the incident, “It forced an enormous unnecessary use of resources, including specialized units, fire, police and security staff.” The officers were clearly annoyed that the passenger did not realize that he might set off a security alert. Constable Blacklock pointed out that the incident inconvenienced travellers and personnel and cost the airlines a considerable amount of time and money re-routing flights and getting connecting flights and destinations for other passengers.
