In Olympia Washington, the mayor pro tem has been arrested for investigation of marijuana trafficking. Joe Hyer, the Olympia, Washington official, was arrested on Thursday at his home. It is being reported that a confidential informant had purchased cannabis at least twice from the Council man during controlled buys. He’s out of jail after posting the $20,000 bail. The New Tribune is reporting that members of the downtown business community have come out in support of Councilman Joe Hyer, some commenting about all the good things he has done for the community. On Friday, Hyer announced his plan to take a leave of absence from the seat he won by a wide margin last year. Hyer had been planned to be formally appointed as a city treasurer scheduled for March 1st, but his arrest raises serious doubts he is eligible for the position. Yesterday, Thurston County Democrats accounced their support of Councilmember Hyer, saying they are not planning on withdrawing his name as the nominee for treasurer unless they became constitutionally obligated. Not surprisingly, others are calling for him to resign.
