A bipartisan bill was introduced in the Minnesota House of Representatives on February 15th to allow farmers in the state to raise cannabis for export to states where it is legal for medicinal use. Last year, Governor Tim Pawlenty vetoed an effort to legalize medical marijuana, but this bill is not seeking to legalize medical marijuana. This bill is meant to legalize growing marijuana for sale in other states. It is called the Medical Marijuana Production and Export Act, and is sponsored by Democrat Representatives Phyllis Kahn, Tom Rukavina, Tom Huntley, Frank Hornstein and Al Juhnke and Republican Representative Jim Abeler. On February 16th, the bill made its way to the Committee of Agricultural, Rural Economies and Veterans affairs.

A quote from the “Purpose” section of the bill:

The legislature finds that the production and export of medical marijuana can contribute to the state’s economy and agricultural vitality and can be regulated so as not to interfere with the strict regulation of controlled substances in this state. The purpose of the Medical Marijuana Production and Export Act is to strengthen the state economy and its agricultural sectors by authorizing the development of a regulated medical marijuana production and export industry while maintaining strict control of marijuana.

  1. Great article! Jim Abeler is my district representative and although he’s a repub, he has voted outside the party lines on several occasions. I’m going to send him a thank you message right now! Thank you for the great work that you do covering this, often overlooked topic.
