Iowa Eyes Medical Marijuana

No one is predicting that Iowa will be the 15th state to legalize medical marijuana, but Iowa has been in the news this week. A poll shows a majority of Iowans support medical marijuana legislation. The other big news out of Iowa, is a public meeting that was held Wednesday with the Iowa State Pharmacy Board to decide whether to recommend marijuana be legalized for medical purposes. The board reviewed 13 questions that they were legally bound to discuss before rescheduling marijuana. The questions started off with a discussion about marijuana’s potential for abuse. The board members generally agreed that Cannabis does have great potential for abuse but there was some disagreement if marijuana would be abused more than drugs currently accessible by prescription. This question is complicated because for Iowa to have medical marijuana they must first remove it from the Legislature’s Schedule 1 classifications. Schedule 1 means a drug that has a high potential for abuse and no safe medical use. The pharmacy board has faced this issue before in 2008 when the American civil Liberties Union of Iowa and others petitioned the board to change the classification. At that time the board rejected the request. It took a judge’s orders in a 2009 ruling that the board must review the classification and decide whether marijuana has an accepted medical use. This time around, the advocatess were lining up to testify in favor of the move towards legalizing medical cannabis and the board voted to recommend the change 6-0.  I read through the comments as they were going up on the Internet during the live meeting, and there were hundreds for making the change, and I was unable to find any comments against making medical marijuaua available to patients. This week the two bills that would have allowed the medical use of marijuana in Iowa failed to meet an initial deadline to stay alive this session of the Iowa Legislature, but with this new development in IOWA cannabis reform, it seems that Iowa might have a good chance with similair measures next time around.
