The first clinical trials in over two decades are showing that medical marijuana is effective in reducing muscle spasms associated with multiple sclerosis and also pain caused by neurological injuries or illnesses. The 24-page report submitted Wednesday to the Californian Legislature, boasts rigorous research protocols, and is expected to show up in peer-reviewed science journals this year. The California state research effort led by John Vasconcellos, a former California Senator, said that it should take all the mystery out of the “Does it work?” question. He was the leader in creating the 10 year old Center for Medical Marijuana Research at UC San Diego. The California legislature established the research center in 2000 to examine whether the therapeutic claims of medical cannabis advocates could withstand scientific scrutiny. Studies on muscle spasms and pain associated with spinal cord injuries and AIDS are being done as well as research on how marijuana affects sleep and driving, limb pain due to diabetes, migraines, facial pain. The study found that inhaling vaporized cannabis is as effective as smoking it, which is obviously the easiest and most popular way for patients to medicate. Igor Grant, the director of the research  said that meeting the complex security regulations required by the DEA and other federal agencies in order to obtain some of the only federally approved cannabis from University of Mississippi was time consuming and cumbersome. Sadly, California Senator Mark Leno who chairs a budget subcommittee on health and human services and is a supporter of medical marijuana said that there will probably be no more financial support of the center due to California’s ongoing budget crisis.
