Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Famed travel writer and television host Rick Steves, an ardent supporter of marijuana legalization, will host a forum in Olympia Tuesday.

Joining Steves at the Capitol Theater at 6:30 p.m. for “Marijuana: It’s Time for a Conversation” will be three state lawmakers who are supporting a bill that would decriminalize marijuana possession. They are Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles, D-Seattle, and Reps.

Brendan Williams, D-Olympia and Rep. Mary Helen Roberts, D-Edmonds.

Reclassifying adult marijuana possession from a crime to a civil infraction carrying a $100 penalty payable by mail would save the state $16 million annually and generate $1 million in new revenue, advocates say.

Another Seattle lawmaker, Democratic Rep. Mary Lou Dickerson, has introduced a bill that would legalize marijuana in Washington state for people 21 and older. State Attorney General Rob McKenna has said he opposes such efforts.

Rick Steves is such an unassuming pot activist and friend of the marijuana movement. His voice has the power to change minds that most of us festival-loving activists would only annoy.
